Ms. Katie Evans Assumes Directorship of Symphonic Youth Orchestra
For over a decade, our Symphonic Youth Orchestra has been under the leadership of Mrs. Patricia Cavell Bulber. Last year, Mrs. Bulber retired from that position and began her role as Conductor Emeritus and adviser to FGBYO.
This year, we are happy to announce that Ms. Katie Evans has accepted the position and will now conduct both the SYO and Pat Chaffin Strings Ensemble.
Kathleen Evans, more familiarly known as Miss Katie by her FGBYO students, was born and raised in the music programs of Southwest Louisiana. At five years old she began learning her first instrument, the piano. It was a downhill slide from there as violin, harp, cello, and bass were quick to follow. In addition to practicing various instruments she was also faithfully involved in school choral programs from third to twelth grade.
After graduating high school, she debated on pursuing a career in the English field of education but music called her back. Seven years post high school she graduated magna cum laude from McNeese State University with two bachelors of music education degrees (instrumental and vocal). While in college, she began instructing beginner level students as an intern with the Dr. Francis G. Bulber Youth Orchestra. After graduating, Kathleen took over the Concert Strings intermediate level string ensemble. She is now the director of both the Symphonic Youth Orchestra and the Pat Chaffin Strings Ensemble.
Ms. Katie currently works at Oak Park Middle School as the String Orchestra director, one of two string programs in Calcasieu Parish. She has started her fifth year teaching in the Calcasieu Parish Public School system. She is also the cantor, choir director, and organist at Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church in Sulphur.
FGBYO welcomes Ms. Katie in. her new expanded role and we look forward to a fantastic year.
